Burgos Tennis captured the 2011 Stanford Showdown
"You have to dedicate your heart and soul to something. Then you go forward. You don't look back. And you don't hold back. You go after whatever that thing is without being afraid to fail" - Apolo Ohno, Olympic Gold Medalist
Burgos Tennis was founded in 1998 and has steadily grown into a Non Profit Foundation in 2011. Burgos Tennis provides high performance tennis training and educational skills development to student athletes from diverse communities.
I have been coaching tennis players and other athletes of all levels for 20+ years. Though I have coached hundreds of sectionally, nationally, collegiately and professionally ranked players, including three national champions. My focus and goal has always been to develop "Champions of Life." I believe that if you focus on the things that make you successful, winning will take care of itself. My mantra on being prepared to win and discovering what your best effort is has proven to be a successful formula for not only developing winners on the court, but winners off the court. I coach winners of life. The will to prepare is more important than the will to win. I have never encountered anyone who regretted giving their best effort. All I ask is that my players give their best. I expect my students to strive to reach their potential. The results will happen on and off the court. I am proudest of the hundreds of students who have gone on to college and pursued their education and careers with the same discipline and drive they learned on the tennis court. Together we have built successful teams and more importantly, lifelong friendships and a unique FAMILY.
The Burgos Competition Team stresses the "Spanish" way to play tennis. Players are taught to focus on consistency, working the point, and looking for opportunities to be aggressive and win. Just as in life. You have to being willing to work hard, recognize the opportunities for success and problem solve. Players develop the self confidence to go for opportunities that arise! Most importantly, they are taught to be part of a team with a common goal. A sense of family is developed from day one. Education is an integral part of our program. Players are expected to balance academics and sport. If not, they are asked to take a break from tennis and focus on academics. Again, all of our players are college bound!
Will you fight when things get tough? Or will you take the easy road and give up? It is my hope that my students learn to give their best day in and day out no matter the result. Students are taught to value themselves and understand that they are worth all the effort they put forth. My focus has always been more than just teaching the game of tennis. The skills learned on the court become important life skills for the future. I teach my players that how you carry yourself, train, and compete on the court is how you will live your life. They learn to love the battle!
Vamos! Hasta la victoria siempre!

EXCELLENCE ON THE COURT, OFF THE COURT & IN THE CLASSROOM IS MANDATORY
This isn't a day care. Participation is by invitation or recommendation. A try out and interview is necessary in most cases. This program isn't for everyone as expectations and discipline are high. There are plenty of other tennis work out programs out there where you can show up when you feel like and not put forth your best effort. They will gladly take your money. This isn't one of them. You are expected to excel on the court and in the classroom. Stroke fundamentals and tournament experience are expected to be on the Competition Team.
Scholarships
Tennis Training and Academic Support Scholarships are available on an as needed basis. If you have the skills, desire and determination, we will help you reach your goals.
Requirements:
Everyone is expected to work hard and help their teammates improve as well. We are not a day care. Even though many of our players pay to participate in the program, everyone is expected to be committed, disciplined and respectful. Poor behavior on and off the court is not tolerated. The services and programs we provide are aimed at developing independence, character, critical thinking, self confidence and a sense of TEAM.
If your only goal is to be self centered, not be responsible to a team and/or you are only able to play in a pristine perfect facility, Burgos Tennis is not for you. The skill to overcome imperfect conditions and obstacles is one of our mantras. Our High Performance goals do focus on maximizing your tennis ability, but also to develop a healthy individual who can perform at their peak under the most stressful conditions on and off the court. Our players learn from the unique experiences that tennis brings and display sportsmanship no matter the result. Yes, your tennis game will improve. But ultimately, our focus is on developing education and life skills that will make you a Champion of Life.
Life long friendships are formed by being part of a team.
Why Tennis?
Tennis demands exceptional mental and physical capabilities from the individual athlete. You cannot be subbed out or pass the ball. Running faster or trying harder don't always work. It's about self control, creating opportunities, and knowing when to go for it.
The same skills necessary to be an exceptional tennis player can be used to excel in life. On the tennis court, the tennis player must objectively assess and address his own weaknesses. He must also work to improve his situation. In match play, the successful player is an expert problem solver, creating and executing a strategy, and playing to his own strengths while exploiting his opponent’s weaknesses. He learns to problem solve and these skills will be transferred off the court.

Mentoring and College Placement Guidance
All of our players are preparing for college. We play a part in helping them meet their goals of attending the school of their choice. We have our former student athletes who are now college graduates and professionals available to mentor our players. For students looking to play collegiate tennis, we promote our student athletes through our network of college coaches, advise and assist our students in communications with their short list of schools and prepare our students for the challenges of being a collegiate tennis player.
We are proud to say that every player who has graduated from our program has gone on to college. Some notable schools our players have gone on to attend include:
