November 2011
Lani Tice had a terrific run in USTA Tournaments in November and will be shooting up the rankings. Lani started the month by capturing the Gorin Tennis Academy Sonoma Junior Open Girl's 16s division defeating Emily Greco 6-4, 6-2. It was a satisfying win as Lani avenged a loss to the same player in the Fairfield tournament. Later in November, our top seeded Lani reached the Girl's 16s Singles finalst falling to Hillsborough's Alexa Corcoleotes in a hard fought match 7-6, 6-3. Burgos Tennis girls rock!

Gabe Sandrolini attended his final Burgos Tennis practice before heading off to University of Denver. Gabe had a terrific career at Burgos Tennis where he was named Marin County All League First Team in 2010 & 2011, MCAL Doubles Champion with Henry Stephens in 2010, Undefeated record with Theo Gough at #1 doubles, helped Tamalpais High School to the 2011 MCAL Team Championship and was an anchor on the USTA Summer League Team.

It couldn't get any closer as Burgos Tennis took two wins over Peninsula Golf & Country Club this week. The B16s team won 5-4 to remain undefeated and the B18s narrowly escaped 4-3 to improve our record to 2-1 in the San Mateo League. Both matches were decided by the final doubles match.
In the B18s match, PGCC won 3 of 4 singles matches. Marco Barretto won the only singles point winning 6-1, 6-0 at #2 singles over Christian Yun. Down 3-1 in the best of 7 team match, our B18s team swept the doubles despite being down in #1 and #2 dubs. First Marco and Lukas Edman were down the entire set before coming back to win 9-7. Brendan Austin and Sam Wexman were down 3-6 before sweeping the final 5 games and the deciding match 8-6.
In the B15s match, the score was 3-3 after the singles. We got wins from Brendan Austin at #2, Aidan Tirpack at #4 and Willie Saiga at #5. Edward Donohue and Aidan dominated at #2 dubs before PGCC took #1 dubs over Sam and Marco. It came down to Willie and Kyle Wong at #3 dubs to take the win 8-5.
Overall good performances. We are definitely learning to enjoy competition and fight no matter the score. More importantly, we are getting valuable experience and growing closer as a team. Overall records are B18s 2-1 and B16s 3-0.

Burgos Tennis players made their make on the Tiburon Summer Junior Open this past weekend as six players came back with trophies. Liza Brusman reached the G18s singles final. Hillary Fazekas battled through back to back third set super tie-breakers before narrowly losing the G16s final 11-9 in the 3rd. Lani Tice came in 4th in the G16s division. Hillary and Lani earlier teamed to take the G16s doubles final 8-0! Sam Wexman reached his second consecutive singles final before being stopped in the B16s finals. Brendan Austin has continued to show steady improvement by stunning the top seed in the quarters and narrowly losing to eventual winner Daniel Cardiff of Lafayette 7-6, 6-1 in the semis. Brendan went on to take 3rd place in B16s. All in all, I saw a lot of improvement and smart play. We are playing smarter and showing greater variety of shot. All of our players are moving up the rankings!

Braving 100 + degree weather, Sam Wexman won four matches to win his first USTA Open Singles title. In the final he defeated Top Seeded James Chen of Fremont 7-5, 6-3. In the semis, Sam came back from 5-8 down in the third set super tie-breaker to defeat Jonathon Li for the second time this year 3-6, 6-1, 10-8. After playing through nearly five hours of tough tennis in blazing heat, Sam returned on the court to team up with Brendan Austin to win their semifinal 8-4 and final 8-6 over second seeded Max Heerinch and Sean McGrath 8-6. This was also the first title for our Top Seeded team of Wexman and Austin who battled back from being down 1-6 to take 7 straight games and the title 8-6. Congrats to both Sam and Brendan who have continued to work hard, improve and climb up the rankings.

Burgos Tennis players took home some hardware today at the De Anza College Junior Championships. Lukas Edman, playing in his first singles tournament, captured the Boy's 18s Singles in the Challenger division by defeating Los altos' Tim Yue 6-1, 6-0. Noodles' lefty spin and serve were just too tough for his Yue. In a battle of Burgos Tennis up and comers, Kyle Wong defeated Edward Donohue to win his first ever singles trophy 6-2, 6-3. The match was filled with long rallies with occasional forays to the net. Aidan Tirpack claimed his first singles title by dominating the Boy's 14s Novice Singles losing just three games in three matches.
Henry Stephens and Theo Gough won the boy's 18s Open Doubles over teammates Henrik Neuwirth and Sam Schlager. Hillary Fazekas and Lani Tice reached the Girl's 16's Open Doubles final. Also 8th seeded Sam Wexman reach the quarters of the Boy's 16s Open. It was a terrific team bonding experience as we had 15 players attend the tournament. No one was ever alone as they had plenty of fellow Burgos Tennis players to warm up with and support them. Playing tournament tennis can be a difficult and lonely experience. Traveling as a team makes it more fun and worthwhile.
Burgos Tennis teams recently took 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in two separate 18s divisions at the 2011 Stanford Showdown sponsored by USTA Nor Cal at the Taube Tennis Stadium. Burgos 2 comprised of Lani Tice, Willie Saiga, Liza Brusman, Hillary Fazekas, Mikaila Smith, Oliver Ramin and Noah Jaffee dominated their 18s group and won by more than 20 points (games). Burgos 3 finished 3rd in the same 18s group. Burgos 1 actually tied Courtside Tennis Club for first place with 70 points after pool play. But instead of accepting the gold with a tie, we preferred to play it out. We narrowly lost to Courtside in the 1st place play off. Overall, not a bad showing for our little Non Profit tennis team playing out of a public facility. The above picture ended up in Inside Tennis Magazine!

The Tam High Boy's Tennis Team returned to glory by capturing their first league title since 2007 with a 5-4 victory of rival Redwood High School in Larkspur. It was a loud and contentious match with a ton of pressure (as all Tam vs Redwood matches are). The tide turned when Ben Taska came back to capture the #5 singles spot after dropping the 1st set. This was followed by Lukas Edman and Noah Jaffe taking the 3rd set super tie breaker at #2 doubles. Always dependable Marco Barretto won at #3 Singles as expected making the team match 2 wins away from the title. The critical match was the #3 doubles match where Henry Stephens and Henrik Neuwirth fought off a match point in a very heated match to win 12-10 in the 3rd set super tie-breaker and match win #4. That made the match score 4-2 and meant that Redwood would need to sweep the final three matches. That didn't happen. Our undefeated tandem of Gabe Sandrolini and Theo Gough easily closed out the team victory at #1 doubles with a brilliant 6-0, 6-1 thrashing of Redwood's #1 team to clinch the championship. Redwood later took the #1 and #2 singles positions in two very close matches making the final score 5-4 Tam.

Freshman Marco Barretto capped off an undefeated rookie season by defeating teammate and defending champion Ben Taska 3-6, 6-4, 10-5 to win the #2 Singles Position at the Marin County Athletic League Individuals. The match was a knock down drag out affair as both players battled through long baseline rallies. The match was decided on just a few points. Marco displayed his usual consistent and mentally tough self despite Ben's well struck shots and inspired play.
